It’s hard to believe summer is already winding down! This month, we’re exploring how our understanding of depression is evolving, how the effects of trauma can be passed down through generations (and what we can do to help break that cycle), and how something as simple as omega-3s can play a role in improving depression. We also have some exciting updates at Innerbloom, including expanded insurance coverage for Spravato and a reminder about our current discount on ketamine infusions.

Can Trauma Be Passed Down? The Cherry Blossom Study

Generational trauma refers to how the effects of trauma can be passed from one generation to the next. We may feel the impact of trauma experienced by our parents or grandparents, sometimes showing up in patterns of anxiety, fear, or the way we respond to stress.

One of the most fascinating examples is the famous “cherry blossom” mouse study. Researchers trained mice to fear a cherry-blossom-like scent by pairing it with a mild electric shock. Remarkably, their offspring-and even the next generation-showed increased sensitivity to the same scent despite never being exposed to the original conditioning.

But this research shouldn’t make us feel stuck with the trauma of our parents or grandparents. New experiences can shape us too. The take-home: Addressing trauma, depression, and unhealthy patterns can improve our own mental health while giving us an opportunity to change what we pass on to future generations.

Why Depression Isn’t What We Think

Dr. Lisa Monteggia TED Talk explaining how ketamine works as a rapid-acting antidepressant for depression.

This video is a helpful overview of our medical understanding of depression and how ketamine offers a different approach to traditional treatment. Neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Monteggia challenges the long-held idea that depression is primarily the result of a simple chemical imbalance, such as low serotonin.

She explains how ketamine can produce antidepressant effects within hours to days and why it can be an important option for people who haven’t responded to traditional antidepressants like SSRIs. The talk also explores the key concept of neuroplasticity and how researchers are looking for ways to extend ketamine’s antidepressant effects.

Now Accepting Blue Cross Blue Shield for Spravato

I’m excited to share that, in addition to Aetna and Medicare, Innerbloom is now in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield! Woohoo!

What does this mean for you? If you have Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, you may now qualify for coverage for Spravato (esketamine) treatment. Spravato is an FDA-approved nasal spray for adults with Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD)—depression that has not improved despite trying at least two antidepressant medications within the past five years.

If you have questions about your benefits or would like to find out whether you may qualify for Spravato treatment, contact Libby, our Clinic Manager, at (805) 321-8471. We’re happy to help you explore your coverage options.

Omega-3s for Depression?

Many people associate omega-3s, like those found in fish oil, primarily with heart health. But research suggests they may also play an important role in improving symptoms of depression.

One study compared 1,000 mg/day of EPA with 20 mg/day of Prozac in 60 patients with major depression. After 8 weeks, EPA and Prozac produced similar response rates (56% vs. 50%), while combining the two produced the highest response rate at 81%.

If you’re considering an omega-3 supplement for mood support, the formulation really does matter. Choose a product that contains at least 60% EPA, with studies generally supporting a daily dose of approximately 1–2 grams of EPA. Personally, I use OmegaGenics, which makes it easy to get enough EPA without all the stinky fish!

Newy: Bridging the Gap Between Ketamine Treatment and Everyday Wellness

Newy brain health supplement

A supplement formulated by Dr. Rivas for enhanced brain and mood support. The formula pairs especially well with ketamine therapy by helping extend and enhance the neuroplasticity effects. That said, the ingredients are equally effective on their own, so it’s a supportive option whether or not someone is undergoing ketamine treatment. Learn more about how Newy supports cognitive function detoxification and cellular repair.
